The NeedleChasers of Chevy Chase are quilters who meet regularly to share the traditions and techniques of quilting, to inspire and learn from one other, and to contribute to the community.

Founded in 1978, the guild has over 90 members who range from beginning quilters to accomplished artists, and from those who treasure traditional designs to those who push the boundaries of fabric and design with bold, contemporary work.

NeedleChasers sponsors a full range of activities that includes programs with outside speakers, quilting bees, service projects, and a biennial quilt show.  The program year is from September through June, and most activities take place during the day on Wednesdays.

We welcome new and experienced quilters from Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, and hope you’ll consider joining us!

On November 7 and 8, we'll  be holding our biennial quilt show at the  National Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C.  You won't want to miss this terrific opportunity to see over 200 art, contemporary, and traditional quilts, and to start your holiday shopping early with the hundreds of quilts and other fine, hand-crafted items we have for sale!   Quilters who love bargains (is there a quilter who doesn't?) will want to make a beeline for the show's Calico Elephant  for  great deals on fabric, notions, and sewing books.  Finally, we'll be having quilting demonstrations and activities for visitors of all ages.

We hope you can join us  for this fun event!  Just click the quilt show starburst at right for more information.

WEE BEES

On JULY 2 and AUGUST 6,  the NeedleChasers' service group, the Wee Bees, will get together from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at a member's home to tie quilts for organizations that serve children in need, including the HSC Pediatric Center.   If you'd like to "tie one on" but haven't been to a Wee Bees' meeting before, call Chris Guenther at (301) 564-5654 for information about the meeting location.

QUILTING FOR GOOD

On AUGUST 22, stop by G Street Fabrics in Rockville for a fun day of making quilts for babies and young children at Mary’s Center for Maternal and Child Care in D.C.  Fabric and batting will be provided.  Just show up between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and bring basic sewing supplies, thread, and any fabric or batting you’d like to donate.  To register, call the education department at G Street Fabrics, (301) 231-8998.

Questions? Call Prue Hoppin at (202) 986-6851.

BOUTIQUE BEES

Come to Debbie Lamb-Mechanick's house on JULY 16 and AUGUST 20  from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for another "Boutique Bee" to make items for the Quilt Show Artisan Boutique.  At the June Boutique Bee, we assembled buttons for Quilt Show volunteers, constructed some great office/kitchen bulletin boards with oilcloth pockets, and cut out tool belts.  We hope to have some more fun projects for you to work on in July and August, but feel free to bring your own!   If you need a map to Debbie's house, click here.

JULY AND AUGUST BEES

On JULY 23, the NeedleChasers will hold their July quilting bee at Kay Winner's house from 9:30 to 12:00 noon.   If you don't know how to get to Kay's house and need a map, click here.

In August, we'll be having an ALL-DAY QUILT CAMP at Debbie Lamb-Mechanick's house!   Bring your own project, or apply your terrific sewing skills to service projects for HSC Pediatric Center and Children's Hospital (fabric supplied) or to kits for items for our quilt show's Artisan Boutique.  Snacks provided!  Just show up with or without your sewing machine on AUGUST 27 anytime from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.   If you've never been to Debbie's house and need a map, click here.

Not having a hand-sewing project that you're currently working on is no reason not to come to a bee!  A bee provides a terrific opportunity:

  • To socialize with other NeedleChasers (sometimes not possible at our busy monthly program meetings)

  • To get expert tips and advice on a UFO that's coming up on its fifth anniversary because you can't figure out what to do next (or how to do what needs to be done next), a color or design issue, a block that won't lie flat, a binding that puckers, or any of hundreds of other quilting conundrums

  • To share a great new tip or technique that you've learned or to recommend a new quilting book, magazine, class, tool, etc.

For more information on any of these activities, click the ACTIVITIES button above or read our current newsletter.
