Contemporary and Art Quilts

"Homage to Hubble:I", 51" w x 40" h.  Selected for Smithsonian Community Art Show, summer 2011. Cotton and other fabrics, pieced, couched and quilted.  "The Stars at Play," 45" w x 60" h. A print of the NYC skyline is transformed into a kaleidoscope of dancing stars  "Desert Sunset", 47" w x 37" h. An abstract kaleidoscope based on two fabrics in desert color.

Transformations have long attracted and challenged me – first in my architectural work, now in quilting and fiber arts.  I enjoy finding and expressing the possibilities in fabrics, letting the material find its voice.  Traditional piecework leads me to improvisation and new expressions, including couching and other embellishments.  Most of my pieces are art quilts, though I also make bed quilts, table runners and other useful quilted objects.  Each project brings its own challenges and delights.

"North Country" 34" w x 30" h.  A novelty print of lake, forest  and mountains deconstructed and remade with geometric abstraction.  "The Green Man, 25" w x 16" h.  The symbol of "greening power" emerges from a pieced and appliqued background.  "Tree of Life", 84" w x 93" h. A rainbow of batiks play circles against diagonal stripes.
