The NeedleChasers sponsor monthly activities from September through June on the second Wednesday of the month.

PROGRAM MEETINGS

There are eight program meetings that feature a speaker, slide show, trunk show, demonstration, or workshop on a topic of interest to quilters.  These meetings include time for business matters and announcements.  We encourage members to bring their latest quilt and needle projects for "show and tell".

Except where otherwise indicated, program meetings are held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at North Chevy Chase Christian Church, 8814 Kensington Parkway, Chevy Chase, MD  20815.   If you'd like to join us for coffee and camaraderie, please come at 9:30 a.m.!  Some months, we'll have a brown-bag lunch after the program, where members can ask quilting questions, share tips, and learn new skills.  These post-program get-togethers will be noted on the schedule below, as well as on our home page.

DIRECTIONS FOR DRIVERS:  If you're going north on Connecticut Avenue, turn right onto Kensington Parkway (at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue, Jones Mill Road, and Kensington Parkway).  Go two blocks, then turn left onto Kenilworth Driveway.  Make an immediate left into the church parking lot.

If you're going south on Connecticut Avenue (e.g., from the I-495 Connecticut Avenue exit), you can't turn left onto Kensington Parkway.  However, you can make a legal U-turn at Manor Road, which is the next light.  You'll then be going north on Connecticut Avenue, and can turn right onto Kensington Parkway.  Follow the directions above.

DIRECTIONS FOR NON-DRIVERS:  If you're taking public transportation from D.C., the L-8 bus takes you to the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Woodlawn Road, which is 3 blocks from the Church.  Walk south on Connecticut Avenue, turn left on Montrose Driveway, then turn left on Kensington Parkway.  The Church is on your left.

Call Suzanne Tobey or Debbie Lamb-Mechanick if you need to be picked up at a Metro stop or need help making carpooling arrangements.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY.  In snow or other inclement weather, we follow the closure policies of the Montgomery County public schools.  If the schools are closed in the morning or all day, our monthly meeting will be cancelled.  To find out whether Montgomery County public schools are closed in inclement weather, listen to your radio or TV, or visit the Montgomery County Public Schools web site.

SEMI-ANNUAL LUNCHEONS

In addition to the eight program meetings, the NeedleChasers host two luncheons in a restaurant or a member's home in December and June.

SEPTEMBER 10 -- GABRIELLE SWAIN

Gabrielle Swain, an internationally recognized quilt artist and teacher, will be coming to us from Texas for both a lecture (part of the monthly program meeting) and two-day workshop.   Gabrielle’s lecture will be a lighthearted approach to appliqué in the 21st century entitled Not Your Grandma's Appliqué.  This diverse look at modern appliqué will examine how each artist approaches appliqué, from fusing to needle-turn. Gabrielle will also discuss the technique of painterly appliqué and how each artist uses this painterly quality.

SEPTEMBER 10 AND 11 -- WORKSHOP WITH GABRIELLE SWAIN

Gabrielle Swain will conduct a two-day workshop entitled Designing From Nature for Appliqué.  Participants will use their favorite photograph or drawing from nature to create an original appliqué quilt.  This class covers the principles of color and design plus a variety of appliqué techniques.  Reverse and direct appliqué along with special techniques will be combined with surface design techniques to complete your design.

Attendance at the workshop is limited, and there are only a few spaces left.  If you'd like to participate, please contact Debbie Lamb-Mechanick at (301) 654-0067 as soon as possible.  The cost of the workshop is $75.00.

OCTOBER 8 -- KATHY LINCOLN

Kathy Lincoln will present Designing Your Own Pieced Block.  She will explain how to use public domain blocks to make your own special quilt.  What do you chose and how do you execute the design you have floating around in your head are the questions answered by this intriguing lecture.

NOVEMBER 12 -- ROSE HAHN

After the quilt show, treat yourself to a wonderful presentation by Rose M. Hahn.  Her lecture on Painting with Fabrics will illustrate how the right fabric choice, threads, and additional embellishments can add depth and realism to landscape and still life  art quilts.  A must for traditional and art quilters!

DECEMBER 10 -- HOLIDAY LUNCHEON

Our annual holiday luncheon!
