The NeedleChasers sponsor monthly activities from September through June on the second Wednesday of the month.

PROGRAM MEETINGS

There are eight program meetings that feature a speaker, slide show, trunk show, demonstration, or workshop on a topic of interest to quilters.  These meetings include time for business matters and announcements.  We encourage members to bring their latest quilt and needle projects for "show and tell".

Except where otherwise indicated, program meetings are held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at North Chevy Chase Christian Church, 8814 Kensington Parkway, Chevy Chase, MD  20815.   If you'd like to join us for coffee and camaraderie, please come at 9:30 a.m.!  Some months, we'll have a brown-bag lunch after the program, where members can ask quilting questions, share tips, and learn new skills.  These post-program get-togethers will be noted on the schedule below, as well as on our home page.

DIRECTIONS FOR DRIVERS:  If you're going north on Connecticut Avenue, turn right onto Kensington Parkway (at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue, Jones Mill Road, and Kensington Parkway).  Go two blocks, then turn left onto Kenilworth Driveway.  Make an immediate left into the church parking lot.

If you're going south on Connecticut Avenue (e.g., from the I-495 Connecticut Avenue exit), you can't turn left onto Kensington Parkway.  However, you can make a legal U-turn at Manor Road, which is the next light.  You'll then be going north on Connecticut Avenue, and can turn right onto Kensington Parkway.  Follow the directions above.

DIRECTIONS FOR NON-DRIVERS:  If you're taking public transportation from D.C., the L-8 bus takes you to the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Woodlawn Road, which is 3 blocks from the Church.  Walk south on Connecticut Avenue, turn left on Montrose Driveway, then turn left on Kensington Parkway.  The Church is on your left.

Call Suzanne Tobey or Debbie Lamb-Mechanick if you need to be picked up at a Metro stop or need help making carpooling arrangements.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY.  In snow or other inclement weather, we follow the closure policies of the Montgomery County public schools.  If the schools are closed in the morning or all day, our monthly meeting will be cancelled.  To find out whether Montgomery County public schools are closed in inclement weather, listen to your radio or TV, or visit the Montgomery County Public Schools web site.

POTLUCK LUNCHES

In addition to the eight program meetings, two potluck lunch meetings are held in members' homes in December and June.

SEPTEMBER 12 -- A QUARTET OF DEMOS!

Thanks to our creative members, we'll all be treated to a set of fascinating demonstrations where we can learn how to:

~ Embellish a quilt with beading
~ Make perfect bindings every time
~ Work with oil paintsticks
~ Edit photos to prepare them for printing on fabric and print them

Following the meeting, we'll have our first brown bag lunch. Bring your own, or take a quick trip to one of the delis on Connecticut Avenue.  Danita Rafalovich will share some of her exquisite Japanese fabrics, followed by a discussion of how best to use future brown bags – for socializing, helping each other with quilting problems, demonstrating a new technique someone has learned, etc. -- and how often we would like to do them.

OCTOBER 10 -- KAREN FRICKE

Karen will treat us to a mixture of her personal quilting journey; her focus on Judaic fiber arts; and her signature technique, Thread Sketched Photography.  She'll explain the process and come with plenty of samples to share.  She has an article in the October/November 2007 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.

This month's brown bag topic is Our Sewing Spaces:  The Good, the Bad, and the Messy!

Nancy is a nationally recognized artist, teacher, lecturer, and writer.  Learn the background, history and tradition of the modest and humble running stitch known as Sashiko.  Nancy will show how easy this simple mending technique can be updated and applied to your own garments and fiber art, creating exciting areas of interest and texture.  To see some of Nancy's sashiko bags and jackets, as well as the items members brought for show-and-tell, click here.

This month's brown bag topic is Paper Piecing.

MARCH 12 -- SUSAN D.  GRANCIO (Photos in Quilts)

Love for and exploration of various needle arts from her early years led Susan to choose quilting as her creative medium over thirty years ago.  Susan will discuss using photographic images in quilts, exploring the various methods for transferring pictorial images onto cloth and then incorporating them into quilts.  To view some of Susan's quilts, as well as the items members brought for show-and-tell, click here.

APRIL 9 -- CYNDI ZACHEIS SOUDER

Ever wonder how much fabric to buy? Which fabric to buy? Should you wash it before you cut it? How should you store it? In this lecture, Cyndi will talk about these topics and share how she manages her fabric stash. Using some of her own quilts, she’ll talk about how her approach to fabric management contributed to their design.  If you missed Cyndi's entertaining talk and great tips, you can view some of her quilts, as well as members' show-and-tell quilts, by clicking here.
